Cast on 44 sts with MC. Work in stocking stitch for 3 rnds. Change to CC, knit in pattern stitch until piece measures 7 cm / 2¾ in.
Start the increases on an odd row of the pattern stitch.
Work 37 sts, slip last 14 sts just knitted onto a stitch holder (or a safety pin) to pick up later for thumb. Work remaining 19 sts. (Make a note of on which row of the pattern stitch you are currently working on so that you can later continue working on the thumb on the right row.)

On the next odd row of the pattern stitch, dec 2 sts (by k3tog) at the end of needles #2 and #4 (= 40 sts remaining). Continue with the pattern stitch until there is approx 3 cm / 1—1¼ in remaining to the tip of your longest finger.
Start the decreases on an odd row of the pattern stitch. Dec 2 (by k3tog) at the beginning of needles #1 and #3 or at the end of needles #2 and #4 on every other rnd 7 times (= 12 sts remaining). (By alternating the placement of the decreases the mitten tip does not become slant.) Work to the end of an even row. Divide the sts onto two needles, 6 sts per needle. Graft the end of the mitten together using kitchener stitch.
Work 14 sts on the stitch holder, pick up 4 sts at base of the 2 cast-on stitches (= 18 sts). Continue with the pattern stitch to the half way of the thumbnail.
