Echo Azure

This shawl design was conceived without a clear vision on where it would go.

 
 On the back of Pennyflower and Boom Star, I wanted to knit another shawl that plays on contrasts, different colors, and interesting textural stitch patterns. For this shawl design, I wanted to experiment with a solid color and a wildly variegated one, and see how they would play off of each other.

 
 The shaping is my favorite shawl shape — asymmetric, on the bias, top corner to bottom edge. The interesting texture is made by alternating garter-stitch stripes and shell stitches made with knit-below stitches. And the entire shawl can be knitted without a single purl stitch!

The name was inspired by shimmering colors on the wings of a blue butterfly: the echo azure (Celastrina echo). For the sample I used JellybeansYarns Merino Nylon Sock in Stormy Weather and Iridescent.

Echo Azure is knit on the bias to create an asymmetric triangle that is both comfortable to wear and fun to work on. A shell-stitch border and a stretchy bind-off finish off the design. The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology. Pattern instructions are provided only in written format but a step-by-step photo tutorial for knitting the shell stitch is included in the pattern.
