On the Longest Night of the Year...

Updated: Jun 18, 2021

Right on the heels (pun intended) of the Shortest Day mittens comes a matching pair of colorwork slippers, Longest Night. These toe-up slippers were also inspired by the winter solstice. On the longest night of the year, keep your toes warm and cozy up by the fireplace in a pair of comfy slippers.

The stranded colorwork does double duty by providing a decorative fabric on the outside and an extra layer of warmth on the inside. Choose a holiday-themed color palette or a neutral color combination to wear with your favorite pajamas.

Longest Night slippers are a quick knit — perfect for gift knitting. Worked in sport-weight yarn, they knit up really fast. The slippers have a holiday-themed snowflake design in colorwork. And the colorwork is really easy: it's easy to memorize, doesn't contain long floats, and you're only working with two colors.

You know how with socks it's a milestone to get to the heel? And then it's the same amount of knitting ahead? Not with these slippers! They're finished with a short folded picot cuff, like the Shortest Day mittens. The heel is done in one color and when you're done with the heel flap, you're pretty much done.

Longest Night appeared originally in the Cold Weather 2017 issue of Stranded Magazine. The pattern is now also available on Payhip, LoveCrafts, and Ravelry (seizure warning).
