Intertwined

A couple of weekends ago I spent three days and two nights at the annual Kierot puikot knitting retreat. This was the eighth time the retreat was organized and the seventh time I've been able to attend. Going to the retreat every year is something I always look forward to and it's the perfect spring getaway with lots of knitting, laughter, and great friends. And yarn shopping.

This year, like many years before, we had an official retreat pattern that was exclusive to the retreat attendees. In fact, we had two such patterns this year: the Yhteen kiedotut ('Intertwined') socks by Tiina Kuu and the Onederful Triangle shawl by Hanna Kyttä. I went with the sock pattern because it was a small enough project I could commit to over one weekend.

Yhteen kiedotut is a pair of cuff-down socks that come in three sizes: 60, 66, and 72 sts. The socks feature a twisted-rib cuff, a panel of twisted stitches running along the outside edge of each foot, and gusset increases done in twisted stitches. That's a lot of twisting!

This was the first time since 2016 that I knit socks from the cuff down so it was a bit of a change of pace for me.

The yarn I chose for the socks is a soft BFL sock yarn from a brand-new indie dyer, Vole's Nest Hand Dyed, a retreat vendor and attendee herself. I wanted a light, subdued color for the socks so that the twisted-stitch details are able to come through nicely. The color is a light minty green with tiny flecks of dark gray, aptly named Robin's Egg.

In hindsight, I should have cast on the size M (66 sts) for the cuff and then gone down to 60 sts for the foot. The pattern is extremely clear and well-written. The design is elegantly simple yet interesting. But I still feel toe-up is the superior way to knit socks. 😉
