Being a knitwear designer I feel like I'm currently one step ahead of the current season. We're in the middle of the first summer heatwave but Garnstudio has already published the preview photos for their fall collection. Let's take a look at the 5 hottest fall and winter knitwear trends for the 2019-2020 season.

#1. Overtly Oversized
The 1980s called and said you need more volume! Copious amounts of positive ease in garments still continues to be extremely trendy. For the fall season this trend is now coupled with big and bulky yarns.

#2. Cable Comeback
Colorwork yoke sweaters have been all the rage for the past couple of years but I feel (hope?) this season the tide is turning to cables. The DROPS collection features lots of designs with big, oomphy cables that are the centerpiece of the garment.
This moss-green beauty is my absolute favorite of the entire collection. The color, slim fit, raglan construction, and the eye-catching cable detail are right up my alley. I'm a cable girl through and through so to see cables return this fall really makes my heart sing!

#3. Textured
And you can't have cables without bobbles! Knit-and-purl textures, bobbles, and popcorns are all heavily featured in the collection — often on the same designs.

#4. Statements Sleeves (Still)
Statement sleeves were also on the Spring/Summer knitting trend list and are not going anywhere just yet. I'm seeing lots of massive bell or bishop sleeves in the new collection. (I still think this is yarn manufacturers' conspiracy to sell more yarn.)

#5. One, Two, Brioche
Two-color brioche designs had emerged on the DROPS radar for their Spring/Summer 2019 collection. In the Fall/Winter line-up brioche is taking a step in the more subdued direction. It's still prominently featured but now in one-color Fisherman's rib style designs or in color-changing or gradient yarns.
I particularly love this hat & shawl set in rust-colored alpaca. Very elegant!
As for the color palette for the Fall/Winter season, DROPS is sticking really close to the Pantone Fashion Color Trend Report. Mustard yellows, rusty brick oranges, smoky blues, dusty pinks, and grays & beiges are all very on point for the muted fall look.
