Levity

This is my biggest handspun/handknit project to date: 1K meters of lace-weight two-ply handspun, knit into a gigantic shawl.

Back in Spring 2016, I picked up these two braids of maroon-y brown fiber that so obviously wanted to become a combo spin (or combo ply, rather). Initially I'd wanted to do a navajo-ply but ended up two-plying the singles, which meant I ended up with a finer yarn — and a LOT more yardage. For a while I toyed up with the idea of knitting a cardigan with this massive skein but then ended up going with a shawl instead.

For the shawl pattern, I wanted something that would work well with the self-striping nature of two-ply, i.e. nothing too busy. I ran into Kelly McClure's Levity Shawl, a top-down crescent-shaped shawl with a wide border worked sideways. This type of design was great for highlighting the long color sections in the skein. When the pattern could also easily be scaled up, it turned out this was the ideal pattern for the yarn.
