It Started with a Sketch: Honung

Fall is here — my favorite knitting season! And what a better way to welcome the cooler weather than with a new pullover.

The origins of this sweater go back almost a year to last fall when I was working on the Free Falling cowl. Swatching for the honeycomb lace I love so much I grabbed a partial skein that happened to be honey-yellow single merino. The combination of the eyelet pattern and yarn was so beautiful I wanted to center an entire design around it. And I couldn't quite get over the cowl idea... in fact, I wanted the cowl to be the big eye-catching detail of the design. And so the idea for Honung was born. (And the name: 'honung' is Swedish for honey.)

Honung is a cozy pullover with a voluminous cowl neck to keep you warm in the fall breeze. This raglan-sleeved pullover is worked from the top down in one piece, starting with the neck edge. The big cowl neck is knitted last, and adds an extra layer of warmth and coziness. You can let the cowl drape like a waterfall on a sunny day. But when it's a gloomy, drizzling day, you can keep warm by pulling the cowl up to cover your neck.

Hem, cuffs, and the big cowl are worked in honeycomb lace, a simple eyelet pattern. Otherwise the pullover is just plain stockinette, making it super easy to knit. All bottom edges are finished with rolled edges — just let it roll, baby!

Choose a lovely, drapey yarn for Honung to make the cowl hang beautifully. I used Life in the Long Grass Singles in the colorway Harvest but any superwash merino singles or wool/silk singles would be gorgeous. Just keep in mind that the cowl takes up a LOT of yardage — pick one skein extra to your normal sweater quantity.

You can grab a copy of Honung on Raverly.
