Firm Foundations

Last summer I had the immense pleasure and honor of designing a new shawl for The Fibre Company's latest design collection. And that collection is out today!

Foundations SS19 is a six-piece collection featuring four of The Fibre Co.'s lovely yarns: Luma, Meadow, Canopy Fingering, and Cumbria Fingering.

This collection is inspired by the basics needed in every knitter’s Spring/Summer wardrobe. Lightweight shawls layered over summer dresses and throw-on cardigans for cool mornings; each piece adds versatility, wearability and style to your handmade wardrobe. Knitters of all skill levels will find hours of enjoyable knitting in these simple patterns, whilst novices will learn clever techniques to further progress their skills.

When I was approached by The Fibre Co. and they asked my interest in designing for the collection, it was a resounding YES! from me. My contribution to the collection is Irish Sea, an asymmetrical triangle-shaped shawl knit in Meadow.

Irish Sea is a super-wearable triangle shawl with beautiful drape and fluidity. The crisp stitch definition from Meadow emphasises the rhythmic garter stitch and delicate lace as it travels down the edge of the shawl. The size can be adjusted, according to your taste, by knitting more or less repeats.

Having worked with Meadow previously on the Soft River shawl, I knew its properties: the lovely sheen and drape that comes with silk, the warm touch of merino and llama, and the rustic tweediness of linen. This yarn makes the perfect, flowing light-weight spring and summer accessories... and garments, too!

The Irish Sea shawl comes in two sizes, Small and Large (and is really easy to size up or down). You can knit the smaller size one using just one hank of Meadow; the larger size requires two hanks. I knit the sample shawl in a deep, rich indigo color named Larkspur.

In addition to Irish Sea, the collection includes five other designs by four different designers: two cardigans (Eartha Bee by Sarah Hatton and Heritage Coast by Verena Cohrs), a crescent-shaped short-row shawl (Seacote by Paulina Popiolek), a rectangular stole (South Head by Sabine Frisch), and a trapeze-shaped shawl (West Cumberland by Verena Cohrs).

Each pattern in the collection is available for purchase on The Fibre Co. website and on Ravelry. And if you purchase the yarn for a project from any of The Fibre Co. stockists worldwide, you'll receive the pattern free of charge!
